Read To Me
By Jane Yolen

Read to me riddles and read to me rhymes,
Read to me stories of magical times.
Read to me tales about castles and kings.
Read to me stories of fabulous things.
Read to me pirates and read to me knights,
Read to me dragons and dragon-book fights.
Read to me spaceships and cowboys and then,
When you are finished -- please read them again.

When children come home at the end of the day, The question they're asked as they scurry to play is, "Tell me what you did today?"
And the answer they give makes you sigh with dismay.
"Nothing, I did nothing today!"
Perhaps nothing means that I played with blocks,
Or counted to ten, or sorted some rocks.
Maybe I painted a picture of red and blue
Or heard a story of a mouse that flew.
Maybe I watched the gerbils eat today
Or went outside on the swings to play.
Maybe today was the very first time
That my scissors followed a very straight line
Maybe I lead a song from beginning to end,
Or played with a special brand new friend.
When you're in Kindergarten,
And your heart has wings,
"Nothing" can mean so many things!!

THERE'S NOTHING IN MY BAG TODAY

Today I did my math and science,
  I toasted bread.
  I halved and quartered.
I counted, measured, used my eyes,
  and ears and head.
I added and subtracted on the way,
I used a magnet, blocks and memory tray.
I learned about a rainbow and how to weigh.
So please don't say, anything in your bag today?
You see I'm sharing as I play.
I learned to listen and speak clearly when I talk,
To wait my turn, and when inside to walk.
To put my thoughts into a phrase,
to guide a crayon through a maze.
To find my name and write it down,
to do it with a smile and not a frown.
To put my painting brush away,
So please don't say, what, nothing in your bag today?
I've learned about a snail and a worm,
remembering how to take my turn.
Helped a friend when he was stuck,
learned that water runs off a duck.
I looked at words from left to right,
agreed to differ, not to fight.
So please don't say, did you only play today?

Naming Things
byArden Davidson

I love to give things names.
I think I'll call you Hal.
I'll also call your sweater Fred
and your umbrella, Big Al.

I can't stop naming things.
I name everything I see.
My baseball's name is Sherman
and my bat's named Woe S. Me.

My shoes are Brett and Bart.
My socks are Rick and Rack.
My jeans are Walkin' Willie
and my T-shirt's named Bo Jack.

My eyes are Moose and Juice.
My feet are Stan and Fran.
I name everything I see
and I name everything I can.

When my sis says pass the salt,
I say, "Don't you mean Michelle?"
When my brother wants my jacket,
I say, "Don't you mean Miguel?"

Finally, the other day,
my mother sat me down.
She said, "You must stop naming
everything you see in town."

I promised I would stop it.
Then I named her necklace Bud.
So now I have a new name of my own ...
MUD!

GOBBLE, GOBBLE SONG
Sung to the tune:  Pop Goes the Weasle

A turkey is a funny bird,
His head goes wobble, wobble.
He knows just one funny word--
It's Gobble, Gobble, Gobble!

Mr. Turkey
Sung to the tune:  If You're Happy and You Know It

Hello, Mr. Turkey, how are you? (snap, snap)
Hello, Mr. Turkey, how are you? (snap, snap)
With a gobble, gobble, gobble,
And a wobble,wobble, wobble,
Hello, Mr. Turkey, how are you? (snap, snap)

The Wishbone

Wishbone, wishbone on a dish,
Pick it up and make a wish.
If I pull the wishbone right,
I will get my wish tonight...
Wishbone, wishbone, will I win?
Will I laugh and clap and grin?
When the wishbone snaps in two,
Will my wishbone wish come true?
Wishbone, wishbone,
Now it snaps,
My sister grins and laughs and claps.
Wishbone, wishbone, I don't laugh,
My sister got the bigger half.

Funny Turkey

The turkey is a funny bird.

His head goes wobble, wobble.

And all he says is just one word,

Gobble, gobble, gobble.
