Folders/Notes
Your child's folder will be a main source of communication to and from school. Please place any notes inside your child's folder.
If your child has a change of schedule (ie going over a friend's house, getting picked up, etc.) Please send in a note the day of the scheduled change. All notes should be dated and written on a full - size sheet of paper.
Permission Slips/Money
If you are sending in money or a permission slip, please send them in a marked envelope with the following information written on it:
- Your child’s first and last name
- The amount of money and purpose for the money (trip money, book money).
With so many children and several reasons to collect money, this helps us out tremendously and reduces the likelihood of errors. Also, if the envelope is left on the bus or dropped in the hallway, this information will help the money to be returned to our classroom.
Surprise Boxes
Sharing and verbal communication is an integral part of the Kindergarten curriculum. The Surprise Box is a wonderful opportunity for the children to have fun and use their thinking skills. Each child will receive a Surprise Box schedule at the beginning of the month. Your child will receive a Surprise Box the day before their scheduled day. Please put one item and a clue card in the bag. The clue card should contain 3 written clues that describe what is in the mystery bag. These clues will help the other children guess what the object is. Please practice and rehearse the clues with your child so that he/she feels comfortable sharing in front of the class.
Here is an example of a clue card for a stuffed animal:

2. Some people have a real one as a pet.

What Goes In My Backpack?
Each day your child should come to school prepared with the following:
- a nutritious snack and drink,
- an extra sweatshirt since the temperature in our room fluctuates.
When used properly, e-mail can be a wonderful form of communication. Please remember not to e-mail any time sensitive material (change in your child's schedule, etc).
If you would like to be put on the e-mail notification list, please send me your e-mail address with your child's first and last name in the header to jdiodice@yahoo.com.
Homework
Starting homework in kindergarten (typically twice a week) will get your child used to the routine of doing homework every night . To reinforce what we do in school, please encourage your child to do his/her own writing as much as possible. Please help your child sound out the words on his/her own and please write underneath it if necessary.
There is a lot that you can do to show that you value education and homework.:
- Pick a quiet place with limited distractions
- Provide Supplies - your child will need crayons, markers, glue, scissors, pencils and erasers to complete work.
All written work should be completed in pencil. At times, I will send a homework packet home. Please DO NOT complete the whole packet in one night. Homework should be completed with as much independence as possible. If your child struggles with it, please indicate it on the assignment.
Names, Names, Names
Your child will be working with lots of people this year. So you are familiar with them:
My name is Miss Iodice. My instructional assistant in the room is Mrs. LoBrutto. For switching tables, Mrs. DiRosa comes in and for reading support, Mrs. Johnson is here.
